Hello and welcome back to the blog which allows you to discover more details about characters of the Divergent universe. Earlier this week, we explored the main protagonist, Beatrice Prior. I guess it’s now time to discover a little more about the deuteragonist of the Divergent series: Tobias "Four" Eaton!

Tobias "Four" Eaton's Personnality

Tobias Eaton, nicknamed Four, is a rather direct and discreet person, as well as being quite intelligent.

He remains very discreet about his past and only opens up to people he's close enough to. Unlike the other Dauntless, Tobias seems calmer and less inclined to flaunt acts of bravery.
At the start of the series, Tobias acts as a buffer to Eric's temper.He's also a very good fighter, usually only using his abilities when people need him.Bravery is also very important to Four. Finally, Four has a rather dry sense of humor and doesn't appreciate stupidity.

 

Tobias "Four" Eaton's Appareance

Tobias Eaton is considered to be quite tall, standing at around 2 meters.

He has brown hair, cut very short (in the Abnegation style). He also has a hooked nose and the same mouth as his mother: a full lower lip and a spare upper lip. Tobias has dark blue eyes and is considered muscular, with slightly tanned skin. He naturally frowns.

As for his physical features, Four has a tattoo on his back and shoulders, extending to his hips and the nape of his neck. This tattoo represents the symbols of the 5 factions, as he wishes to be more than the Faction to which he belongs. As Tobias Eaton himself says: "I want to be brave and I want to be selfless, intelligent and honest and kind."

Beneath his tattoo are scars from the time when his father Marcus Eaton abused him.

So, to finish this little analysis, here's some information I consider interesting: Tobias has 2 tics, which are respectively that he bites his nails and that he bites his cheek.

Four is the person who gives Tris the nickname "Six", so she's sometimes nicknamed after her number of fears, just like him.

Tobias Eaton is one of the Dauntless with the lowest number of fears. Indeed, while most Dauntless have 10 or 15, Tobias Eaton has only 4 (which, incidentally, is the origin of his nickname). His fears are as follows: he's afraid of heights, he's afraid of killing innocent people, he's afraid of being weak in the face of his father (which turns into a fear of looking like him) and he suffers from claustrophobia.
His low number of fears could be explained by the fact that he is less Genetically Damaged than the others, even though he is not a Divergent. This normally enables him to remain conscious during simulations.

Finally, in the films, Tobias Eaton is played by Theo James, who is older. Four is aged by 6 years (i.e. 24 years) in the films. Peter Hayes' actor Miles Teller also auditioned for the role.
