Character Analysis in Divergent #1
Beatrice "Tris" Prior
written by Josh Crossley
This new blog will be the first one to give some more details about characters of the Divergent universe. Without any form of surprise, let’s begin this first edition with the main protagonist of the Divergent series: Beatrice “Tris” Prior!
Beatrice "Tris" Prior's Biographical Informations
Name
Beatrice "Tris" Prior
Beatrice "Tris" Prior's Personnality
Beatrice is a smart and stubborn girl. A little withdrawn about her feelings, she's a very thoughtful person.
Stubborn, she's capable of lying when the need arises.
She's creative and a quick learner too, to compensate for her small size compared to other Dauntless. This will enable her to overcome one of her 7 fears, making it 6, which is the nickname Quatre will later give her.
She's also a responsible and brave person, so she'll be surrounded by people who will support her in the future.
Over time, Tris learns to know and trust herself, through Quatre, with whom she succeeds in showing her whole self.
A little detail about her is that she doesn't want to smoke, as it represents vanity in her eyes.
Beatrice "Tris" Prior's Appareance
Beatrice Prior is considered a small person. She describes herself as having the body of a 12-year-old.
Tris has a number of haircuts, which vary in length throughout the series. At first, her hair is long, but sometimes it only reaches as far as her jaw. Her hair colour remains the same, however, remaining blond and straight.
Concerning physical particularities, Tris has three tattoos. The first represents 3 jackdaws on her collarbone, echoing her family: her mother, father and brother. She also has a tattoo on each shoulder. The first on the right shoulder is linked to her original faction, Abnegation, while the second (on the left one) is linked to the Faction she chose after the Ceremony: Dauntless.
As she trains with the Dauntless, her musculature strengthens, moving from a fairly frail build to strong arms.
Finally, Tris has a narrow face and blue-gray eyes. Although not considered “beautiful”, she has features that Christina claims attract attention.
To conclude this little analysis, it's worth talking for a moment about the difference between the books and the in-universe films. For example, with the cancellation of the fourth film, Tris is still alive at the end of the series, unlike in the books. Also, in the books, Tris refuses to touch weapons for a while, after the death of her friend Will. A final difference concerning Tris concerns her physical appearance: she has different-colored eyes. Instead of being blue-gray, her eyes are more hazel-colored.
As for other details about Beatrice Prior, she's a special case within the Divergents. Indeed, she is considered the “perfect” one, her genetic code being the only one to be completely repaired.
Beatrice's fears also include:
powerlessness, the inability to escape and having no control over things, the fear of friends and enemies uniting against her, the fear of death, the fear of being blamed for her family's death and the fear of intimacy.
